Name of our School

The name of this school is quite interesting. There are a couple of different reasons for using this particular name. Zebra crossing is known as a crosswalk in some parts of the world. Children usually cross the street using a crosswalk to get to school, so it is very fitting. This term also came about from an African Safari where the Wildebeest and the Zebra travel together through the Serengeti to the Masai Mara parks and meet at a river to cross it.

This is a very dangerous task for them, and much Planning is required, as they trample over one another or drown or get eaten by crocodiles. Once they have crossed the river, they have been successful and can celebrate, but not quite yet, as they are very tired from the task just performed and still have to be alert for carnivores ready to attack. This is an annual occurrence where many tourists travel to see this great event of millions of animals and is known as the 7th wonder of the world.

Zebra Crossing has been operating since 2010. We are excited to expand our school, offering new learning experiences, with a lot of fun and unforgettable moments for years to come. Thank you to all the students and families for their support.

Our Staff

Director

Aliya Khakhi:

Aliya graduated from the University of Lethbridge with a degree in Business, majoring in Human Resources and Industrial Relations. Aliya worked for A few years in this field gaining tremendous management experience and expertise. Aliya is married and has two sons and 1 daughter. Iliyan, Aryan and Saphira who have all been through the Montessori program. Children and their education have always been her passion from a very young age. She wanted to provide educational services with quality materials and an environment to thrive in. It was at this time that Aliya received a diploma as a trained Montessori teacher through the North American Montessori Centre due to the strong belief in the Montessori philosophy and understood the importance the first few years of a child’s life really are important. Aliya has seen first-hand the results of Montessori and education at young age. It is vital that children have the opportunity to seek education and be well rounded individuals. Early childhood education is becoming a necessity in our world and the results prove how vital it is for children to have a good start and make connections in their brain at such a rapid rate from age 2-6 years of age. She has brought her life’s work and love to Zebra Crossing Montessori and offers what has not been done before. Zebra Crossing Montessori is unique and has an edge over any child care facility in Calgary. It really sets a new standard in this industry. Children are our future and legacy; they deserve nothing but the best.

Teachers

Miss Mahrukh:

I have my Montessori teacher’s certification from the London school of Montessori Teachers Training in Karachi, Pakistan. I follow the philosophy and method of learning of Dr. Maria Montessori. I have been teaching Montessori for more than ten years now. I have two daughters. One is in High school and the second in grade 2. Both my girls attended the Montessori program and thrived from it. I love working with children and the Montessori way of teaching. I am very excited to work at Zebra Crossing Montessori and contribute my knowledge and expertise.

Miss Marisela:

I am a dedicated bilingual professional (English-Spanish) committed to providing early child development. Highly skilled in developing classroom environments that are stimulating, fun and diverse to accommodate all learning styles. Demonstrated capacity to teach and direct students while maintaining high levels of interest and achievement. Able to establish positive relationships with students, parents and coworkers. Strong planning, organizational and leadership abilities.

Miss Shahbano:

I am an AMI trained Montessorian with more than ten years of work experience in a pure Montessori environment in different capacities. I have also earned my Masters in English Literature form the University of Karachi (Pakistan). I am married and have 3 amazing boys. Montessori to me is a way that leads to a complete transformation of a young fragile soul into a self-sufficient and independent adult. The “Montessori Method ” helps the children to “help themselves “to discover their strengths and potentials. A Pure Montessori Environment is very rightly called a “HOME EXTENSION” meaning the young ones are not allured by the artificialities rather they are given opportunities to manipulate and work with the real-life objects thus gaining hands on experience.

My observations over the period of time have made me a firm believer that a “Montessori Child” is a “Happy Child”.

Miss Zahra:

I graduated from Mount Royal University in 2012 with a level 2 certificate in Early learning and child care.  I have always been around children growing up as my mother was a day home provider. Once I graduated high school I volunteered as a teacher at religious classes for elementary children. It was there I found my passion for teaching and educational crafts. Not only am I living my dream as a teacher, I am also embracing my creative passion for scrapbooking and cardmaking. I have had the pleasure of exploring both daycare and Montessori childcare, and truly believe the Montessori philosophy provides the best experience for young children. Working and seeing firsthand the results of Zebra Crossing Montessori has given me the passion to continue teaching children using the Montessori method. I am currently working on attaining my level 3 certification for Child development supervisor. The greatest sign of success for a teacher is when “the children are working as if I did not exist” Maria Montessori.

Miss Asma:

I have an early learning and child care diploma from Bow Valley College, Calgary and earned my childcare development supervisor certificate (CDS) from Alberta Childcare Staff Certification. I have a Masters degree in Chemistry from Lahore, Pakistan. My family has moved to Canada eight years ago from UAE. I have two children and we love to travel, hike and explore. I have been passionate about teaching children and have been associated with the teaching profession for many years in Pakistan, Middle East and now in Canada. My goal is to make a difference in children’s’ lives every day as I believe early learning lays the foundation for child education and personality.

Miss Angelica:

I am a graduate of Bachelor in Elementary Education with a Specialization in General Education at Nueva Vizcaya State University, Philippines. I am a Licensed Professional Teacher and worked with children in the Philippines. I am married and I have 1 daughter who is now in kindergarten. I love children and I believe that Montessori is the best way for a child to learn in becoming independent and reaching their full potential. I am very much excited to be a part of Zebra Crossing Academy family. I hope to gain a lot of experience working with the children who attend this school.

Miss Razia:

I graduated from Business Administration Management in 2009. I did business for a few years before I decided to change my career path to early learning and child care in 2019. I have obtained my Certification in Montessori. The reason for the career change to childcare was so I was able to spend time with my 2 children. I have a son who is 7 years old and he is in grade 2 and a daughter who is 2 years old. Although it is a big change from business to childcare, I look forward to spending more time with my children and gaining experience from Zebra Crossing Academy.

Miss Bereniz:

Mrs. Bereniz is originally from Baja California, Mexico. She had the opportunity to travel and live in other countries, which increased her love for other cultures, cuisines and customs. She moved to Calgary in 2016. She holds two undergraduate degrees, one in International Business and one in Early Childhood Education. She earned her AMS Early Childhood teaching credentials in 2007. She has seen from first hand the universality of the Montessori Education while teaching Montessori in Mexico, United States, and in Canada. She enjoys cooking, international movies, reading about mindfulness, camping and outdoor activities with her family.

Miss Charu:

I am very excited to be your child’s new school Teacher for this academic year. I am providing this introduction so that you can have better idea who you are leaving your child with. This is a very important milestone in your child’s life and I am both excited and honoured to be a part of this experience. I plan to work closely with you so that together we can make this a special and rewarding year for everyone. I am a graduate in Business Management and have worked in various fields, one of which has been teaching children. I started off my career with teaching primary and secondary kids in school in India before joining the corporate industry. The corporate world helped me gain experience in team building, people management, supervising, problem solving and fair decision making all while developing an appreciation for cultural diversity. In a span of working for past 20+ years and working at various countries I have developed a better understanding of regional dynamics. Oh!! Did I mention, I am from India. But as mentioned I had an opportunity to live in different parts of the world too. Before moving to Calgary I had lived Singapore for more than a decade. I am mother of 2 boys myself aged 20 and 14 years. Children are so impressionable at this young stage of their lives and I want you to know that I take this responsibility of working with your children very seriously. Their genuine enthusiasm for learning is inspiring and I am honoured to be able to guide them to success as early learners. I have y Montessori certification as well and look forward to using these skills at Zebra Crossing Academy. Together we can insure their happiness and success.
